Java General Information

Java is a highly portable object oriented language developed by James Gosling and team with Sun. It was first release in 1995, and the lastest release is Java Standard Edition 8. Since its release, java has achieved a high adoption rate, and it is conceivably the most popular language available today. The language borrowed much of its structure from C/C++, but it has also improved on some of the weaker elements of it's predecessors (garbage collection and memory management). Java compiles into bytecode that can be run from the java virtual machine (JVM). The JVM can be placed on most OS platforms.

With Oracle purchasing Sun Microsystems, java is now owned by Oracle. The latest Java SE 8 can be downloaded at Oracle along with a variety of other java related tools...including NetBeans IDE (a nice IDE for java developement).
